Honda and Taisei Group develop wireless charging system for EVs in motion

Honda is partnering with Taisei Group to develop a Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system that charges electric vehicles while driving, using equipment embedded beneath road surfaces. The technology involves a high power density receiver transmitter unit installed under the vehicle that communicates with energy transfer equipment embedded in the road, which draws power from nearby electrical boxes. Similar concepts have been explored by Stellantis in 2021, an Israeli startup in 2023, and Hyundai, though Honda aims to reduce charging needs rather than accelerate stationary charging speeds.

Why it matters

Dynamic wireless charging infrastructure represents a potential new procurement category for road operators and municipalities, requiring coordination between automotive manufacturers, construction firms and grid operators. If commercialised, the technology could reshape charging infrastructure investment priorities and create opportunities for civil engineering contractors to integrate power transfer systems into road construction projects.

Honda to test 150 kW wireless highway charging in Japan from 2027

Honda will begin demonstration testing of in-motion wireless charging on a 300 metre stretch of highway in Chiba prefecture, Japan, next year. The technology, developed with Japanese firm Taisei, can deliver up to 150 kilowatts to vehicles travelling at 75 mph. Honda sees the system enabling commercial use first and eventually supporting lighter EVs with smaller batteries.

Why it matters

The trial represents early stage infrastructure for dynamic wireless charging, a technology that could reshape roadside charging procurement if proven viable at scale. For CPOs and highway operators, the 300 metre pilot offers a benchmark for the civil works, power delivery and vehicle integration needed before wider commercial deployment.
