Rapid Bus to procure 1,600 electric buses by 2031 in Malaysia

Malaysia's transport minister Anthony Loke announced that Rapid Bus will acquire 1,600 electric buses in stages by 2031 to replace diesel fleets at Rapid KL and Rapid Penang. The first phase covers 250 buses (175 for Rapid KL, 75 for Rapid Penang) at a cost of RM200 million, with 150 buses already in delivery since June 2026 and the remaining 100 due by March 2027. As of 13 October, 52 buses have been delivered (37 in KL, 15 in Penang), supported by 150 chargers at nine depots in the first stage and 100 more at six depots in the second stage.

Why it matters

This multi year procurement pipeline signals sustained demand for EV bus supply and charging infrastructure across Malaysia's major urban transit networks. Contractors and charge point operators should note the phased depot electrification plan, with 250 chargers confirmed across 15 sites by early 2027 and further rollout expected through 2031.
