sonnen files for insolvency in Germany as US sales double
Residential battery storage maker sonnen has filed for insolvency in Germany, affecting roughly 400 employees in Wildpoldsried, Bavaria, just two months after Shell sold the company to investment group TIVEN. The German business, which supports more than 150,000 existing customers, plans to wind down numerous subsidiaries and retain only one production site. Meanwhile, sonnen USA reports sales have doubled and production has tripled year over year, with expanded manufacturing in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and expects to deliver more than 180 megawatt hours of residential battery storage in 2026, largely driven by virtual power plant growth serving more than 6,000 homes in Texas.
Why it matters
The insolvency highlights financial instability in the European home battery market despite strong US growth, raising questions about service continuity for existing installations and the viability of residential storage business models. For CPOs and procurement teams, the divergence underscores regional market risks when selecting battery storage partners for grid integration and VPP projects.
