Arizona opens three of 21 planned EV charging stations four years after federal approval

Arizona Department of Transportation has opened three electric vehicle charging stations in Tucson, Green Valley and Wellton under the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program, with federal funding totalling 1.7 million dollars listed for the locations. The state originally projected 21 stations would be operating by the end of 2025 when it issued procurement documents in January 2024, but the rollout has fallen substantially behind schedule. Arizona received federal approval for its deployment plan in September 2022, when 11.3 million dollars became available immediately and a further 16.3 million dollars followed in October 2022.

Why it matters

The significant delay from 21 planned stations to three operational sites illustrates procurement and delivery challenges that charge point operators and contractors face when executing federally funded programmes. The extended timeline from federal approval in 2022 to limited deployment in 2026 signals potential risks for firms bidding on similar state infrastructure contracts across the United States.
