Geely unveils 4.5 minute ultrafast charging as Chinese firms outpace US on EV speed
Geely Auto announced technology that charges EVs from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes and 10% to 97% in 8 minutes 40 seconds, joining BYD and CATL in the ultrafast charging race. BYD's March launch charges 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, while CATL's April technology reaches 10% to 80% in 3 minutes. By comparison, the fastest charging EVs in the US currently take roughly 20 minutes, with analysts noting China is far ahead with multiple players competing on charging speed.
Why it matters
Chinese automakers are eliminating range anxiety by matching petrol refuelling times, which will drive demand for ultrafast charging infrastructure capable of supporting sub 5 minute charge times. CPOs and network operators must assess whether existing hardware can deliver these speeds or face obsolescence as Chinese EVs enter Western markets.
