Ethiopian Electric Utility opens 11 EV charging stations, bringing its operational network to 14
The Ethiopian Electric Utility said it inaugurated 11 stations in Bishoftu, Mojo, Adama, Batu, Hawassa and five sites in Addis Ababa, taking its network to 14 stations able to charge about 150 vehicles at once. The new sites serve 96 vehicles simultaneously, against more than 54 at the earlier Addis Ababa stations, and time-of-use tariffs run at about 14.85 birr per kWh overnight, 16.57 birr by day and 18.28 birr at peak. The 14 stations form part of a first phase of 40, with 32 planned in Addis Ababa and eight in nearby cities, while the utility says Addis Ababa alone needs about 1,176 stations and cites nearly 140,000 EVs entering the country.
Why it matters
A state utility building out a published, tariffed network against a stated need of about 1,176 stations in the capital alone points to a large gap between supply and demand. Private CPOs and equipment suppliers should note the remaining 26 stations in phase one and the wide variance in fleet estimates when sizing any market entry.
