Ferrstron road tests 150 kW ferrite magnet motor with no rare earths
Indian electric powertrain developer Ferrstron Powertrains has road tested a prototype 150 kW, 400 Nm powertrain in a 2.3 ton multi utility vehicle, using ferrite magnets instead of rare earth magnets. The company says its motor designs achieve 98% efficiency through an axial flux, dual airgap design, windings with in coil cooling and a multi phase flux control algorithm. The on road test brings the technology to Technology Readiness Level 6, with Ferrstron developing powertrains for heavy duty trucks, buses, high speed trains, marine vessels and wind turbines.
Why it matters
Ferrite magnet motors could reduce supply chain risks and costs for EV manufacturers and charging infrastructure developers by eliminating dependence on rare earth materials. The technology's progression to TRL 6 signals potential commercial viability for heavy duty applications that drive charging infrastructure demand.
