Sunrun's Puerto Rico virtual power plant passes 60,000 customers and was dispatched for 18 straight days in October

Sunrun says participation in its Puerto Rico virtual power plant has doubled to more than 60,000 customers, with nearly 70,000 batteries that frequently deliver 45 MW for four hours at a time. The network has been dispatched more than 60 times since April, including daily from October 13 during unusually hot weather, and has grown from around 4,000 customers in 2024 to more than 30,000 in 2025. Residential electricity in Puerto Rico averaged 26.36 cents per kWh in August against a US average of 18.16 cents, according to the EIA.

Why it matters

Aggregated home batteries are being used as dispatchable capacity on a stressed grid, with LUMA calling on the CBES programme when demand or reserve needs exceed generation. For CPOs and procurement teams, it shows distributed storage can be deployed faster than new generation, and it points to potential flexibility revenue and grid-services models where charging load and local storage sit alongside each other.
