Michigan resumes 60 station rollout after court forces release of $51 million federal EV charging grant

Michigan's Department of Transportation will install 60 EV charging stations along major travel routes over the next three years, using $51 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure programme released last month following a federal court order. The Trump administration had withheld the funding for more than a year. The state remains far behind its 2030 target of 100,000 chargers, with drivers reporting difficulty finding available charging points even in major cities like Detroit and Chicago.

Why it matters

The funding release reopens procurement opportunities for charging infrastructure suppliers along Michigan's highway corridors, though the three year timeline and persistent gap to the 100,000 charger goal signal ongoing market uncertainty for CPOs planning long term network investments in the state.
