Midterm Democratic gains unlikely to reverse Trump EV rollbacks, S&P Global warns

Even if Democrats win majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives in the upcoming midterm elections, they would struggle to restore EV tax credits or stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards rolled back by the Trump administration, according to S&P Global. Any new legislation would face a presidential veto, and overriding that requires a two thirds congressional majority that Democrats are highly unlikely to achieve. Jeff Meyer, director at CERA, described overcoming a veto as a very high hurdle.

Why it matters

The analysis suggests US federal EV incentives and regulatory support will remain constrained regardless of midterm outcomes, meaning charging infrastructure developers should continue planning around state level programmes and private sector demand rather than expecting renewed federal backing in the near term.
