Tees Valley secures £11m for 82 electric buses and two depot conversions by 2027

By Eve

The Department for Transport has awarded £11m to Tees Valley to fund 82 additional electric buses entering service from 2027 and the full electrification of two more bus depots, bringing the regional total to three. Combined with an earlier £7.8m ZEBRA allocation in 2024 and £21.7m from bus operators, total investment exceeds £65m and will deliver a fleet of 170 electric buses, representing more than half the region's buses within two years of the first vehicle deployment.

Why it matters

The award signals sustained public funding for regional fleet electrification and depot infrastructure, creating a pipeline of charging installation and grid connection work through 2027. Operators and charge point suppliers can plan for three fully electrified depots and a 170 vehicle fleet, offering scale for depot charging tenders and maintenance contracts.
