Alexandria, Virginia, adds in-route overhead charging and 24-charger depot for expanding electric bus fleet

Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) has installed an in-route overhead charger to extend operational range for its electric buses, vendor ABM announced on Thursday. The city broke ground on 30 October 2025 for a new facility with infrastructure for up to 24 overhead chargers, solar arrays and battery storage. DASH currently operates 16 battery electric buses, with 20 more funded for procurement and 27 planned for future years, building on an electrification programme that began in 2019.
Why it matters: The shift to faster overhead charging at depots and on routes signals growing demand for high-power infrastructure that reduces bus downtime, a procurement priority for transit agencies scaling zero-emission fleets. Alexandria's phased rollout, from six pilot buses in 2021 to a planned 63-unit fleet, offers a reference timeline for CPOs and contractors bidding on similar municipal transit projects.
