BYD Great Tang electric SUV exceeds 10,000 monthly sales for three consecutive months in China

By Eve

BYD's flagship Great Tang electric SUV has sold 40,222 units in its first three months on the Chinese market, with September deliveries reaching 13,010 units. The seven seat model, available in pure electric and plug in hybrid variants, secured over 150,000 preorders before its mid June launch and starts at 239,900 yuan. The top specification electric version uses a 130.15 kWh second generation Blade Battery offering up to 950 km CLTC range.

Why it matters

The rapid uptake of a premium electric SUV with large battery packs signals growing demand for high capacity charging infrastructure at Chinese commercial and residential sites. Fleet and destination charging operators may need to plan for vehicles carrying 100 kWh plus batteries as BYD scales production of its flagship models.

BYD unveils third generation Tang SUV interior with 35.4 inch and 30 inch screens ahead of 2025 launch

BYD has revealed the cabin of its third generation Tang electric SUV, featuring a 35.4 inch integrated display and a 30 inch panoramic screen, ahead of its sale later this year. The five seat flagship model, first shown at the Chengdu Auto Show in August, is equipped with Blade Batteries 2.0 and Flash Charging technology that enables charging from 10% to 70% in as little as 5 minutes. The vehicle offers over 1,000 mm of second row legroom and will be available in two interior colour schemes.

Why it matters

BYD's rapid charging capability and premium interior design signal intensifying competition in the electric SUV segment, potentially influencing charging infrastructure requirements for high power delivery. Fleet operators and charging point operators may need to prepare for vehicles capable of accepting ultra fast charging rates to support the 5 minute top up times BYD is targeting.

Suzuki launches e SKY mini EV at $13,500 with BYD batteries, undercutting BYD's own Racco

Suzuki will launch the e SKY, its first electric kei car, on 16 November at around 2.12 million yen ($13,500), narrowly undercutting BYD's Racco EV at 2.145 million yen ($13,600) to become Japan's cheapest mini EV, according to Nikkei. The e SKY offers a WLTC range of up to 310 km (192 miles) and uses lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by BYD's battery unit. With potential government subsidies of 568,000 yen, the e SKY could cost about the same as Suzuki's petrol Spacia, which starts at 1.53 million yen (slightly under $10,000).

Why it matters

Ultra-low-cost EVs like the e SKY signal intensifying price competition in Japan's kei segment, where affordability and subsidy eligibility will shape fleet and consumer adoption. Procurement teams evaluating light commercial or urban fleets should monitor whether similar pricing and BYD battery partnerships emerge in other markets.

BYD, Tesla and Geely lead as EVs take 24.2 per cent of Australian new car market in September

Electric vehicles captured 24.2 per cent of Australian new car sales in September 2026, the second consecutive month EVs outsold petrol cars, according to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data released on Tuesday. Tesla Model Y led EV sales with 4,476 units, followed by BYD Sealion 7 with 2,687 and Geely EX 5 with 2,008, while Tesla's total September sales reached 5,654 vehicles. Year to date, battery electric vehicles represent 18.9 per cent of the entire market, up from 8.1 per cent at the same point in 2025.

Why it matters

The sustained shift to EVs in Australia, now approaching one in four new car sales, signals accelerating demand for public and workplace charging infrastructure to support the growing fleet. CPOs and procurement teams should note the dominance of Chinese brands BYD and Geely alongside Tesla, which may influence charging network planning and partnership strategies.
