BYD and Sinopec convert Shanghai petrol station into 12 stall Flash Charging hub

By Eve

BYD has opened its first jointly operated Flash Charging hub with state-owned Sinopec at a converted petrol station in Shanghai, featuring 12 charging stalls, a rest area, and a convenience store. The partnership, announced in June 2024, aims to roll out similar conversions across other Sinopec stations, addressing the limited amenities at typical Chinese charging sites, which usually offer only vending machines and public toilets. BYD's PR manager Li Yunfei stated the hub will provide one-stop charging services, contrasting with overpriced and overcrowded highway service areas during peak travel.

Why it matters

The Sinopec partnership gives BYD access to established retail infrastructure and prime urban locations, potentially accelerating Flash Charging network expansion beyond basic parking lot installations. For CPOs and site developers, the model demonstrates how legacy fuel retail assets can be repurposed to deliver enhanced charging experiences with existing amenities.

BYD to sell Racco mini EV in Sri Lanka and Macau after Japan launch

BYD announced at a dealership event in Kanagawa Prefecture that its Racco compact hatchback will expand to Sri Lanka and Macau, following its 2026 Japan launch. The model, priced from approximately 19,000 Australian dollars in Japan, offers a 22 kWh battery with 210 km WLTC range in base form and a 35.8 kWh variant with 320 km range, both with AC and DC charging. Currently available only in right hand drive, the 3.4 metre city car undercuts Japanese rivals in its home market.

Why it matters

The sub 20,000 Australian dollar price point and dual charging capability signal BYD's push into affordable urban EV segments, potentially driving demand for lower cost AC and DC charging infrastructure in new right hand drive markets. Expansion beyond Japan tests whether compact, budget EVs can scale charging network requirements in emerging Asia Pacific regions.

Nio battery swap stations handle three times more sessions per site than BYD Flash Charging during China's Golden Week

During China's National Day Golden Week holiday (1 to 7 October), Nio's 4,168 battery swap stations averaged 44 swaps per site on the busiest day, compared to 15.5 charging sessions per site across BYD's 12,165 Flash Charging stations. Both networks served 188,344 vehicles on their respective peak days, with BYD completing over 1.22 million charging sessions across the week. Nio's busiest single station completed 211 battery swaps.

Why it matters

The threefold efficiency advantage per site demonstrates battery swapping's throughput potential during peak demand periods, offering procurement teams and CPOs comparative data on infrastructure utilisation rates when evaluating charging versus swapping models for high traffic locations.

BYD opens pre-orders for second generation Seagull, its $10,000 entry-level EV

BYD has launched pre-orders for a new, larger version of the Seagull, its most affordable electric vehicle priced from 69,900 yuan (around $10,000) in China and sold overseas as the Dolphin Surf or Dolphin Mini. The entry-level model was the world's sixth best-selling EV through August with over 212,000 units sold, according to CleanTechnica. The second generation model will be bigger and feature upgraded technology to compete with new entry-level electric cars entering the market.

Why it matters

Ultra-low-cost EVs like the Seagull drive mass adoption in emerging markets, creating demand for affordable charging infrastructure at scale. Fleet operators and charge point operators targeting budget-conscious EV drivers will need to plan for increased volumes as sub-$15,000 models proliferate globally.
