Easee and Subaru test off-grid solar EV charging in Canada's Northwest Territories

Norwegian charging firm Easee and Subaru have completed a pilot in Canada's sub-Arctic Northwest Territories, charging a Subaru Solterra using four portable solar panels connected to an EcoFlow battery and inverter. Despite limited daylight, the system delivered around 25 per cent of the speed of a standard 7 kW home or public charger. The trial, observed by Inuit community members, also used the EV to power a light inside an igloo.
Why it matters: The demonstration shows that off-grid, solar-powered EV charging can work in extreme cold and remote locations, opening procurement opportunities for portable charging solutions in areas beyond traditional grid infrastructure. Future applications could include electric snowmobiles and reduce fuel transport costs in isolated communities.
