Australia's first customer-owned DS400 ultra-fast charger goes live in Western Australia

By Eve

eLumina Global has energised Australia's first customer-owned DS400 battery-integrated EV charger at a commercial site in Cockburn, Western Australia, commissioned on 7 August. The 400kW ultra-fast charger uses its own battery storage system, drawing on a 70kW trickle feed from rooftop solar to avoid grid demand spikes during charging sessions. The unit was purchased and installed by local business owner Jon Edwards for public use, designed for sites where grid capacity is limited or demand charges would make fast charging uneconomical.

Why it matters: The deployment demonstrates a viable model for ultra-fast charging at grid-constrained sites, using battery buffering to deliver 400kW speeds from a 70kW connection. For CPOs and site hosts facing network upgrade costs or demand charges, the battery-integrated approach offers a commercial pathway to deploy high-power infrastructure without reinforcement work.
