Battery electric vehicles overtake petrol in Australian sales for first time

By Eve

Battery electric vehicles captured 24.9% of new vehicle sales in Australia in August, surpassing petrol cars at 23.7% and diesel at 21.7%, with more than 27,000 BEVs sold that month. The Tesla Model Y was the country's best selling vehicle overall. Year to date sales through August reached 154,000 units, approximately 50% more than the entire 2024 total, with BEVs holding over 20% market share from May to August.

Why it matters: The shift from petrol to electric propulsion accelerates home and workplace charging demand, expanding the addressable market for residential and depot infrastructure. Sustained monthly share above 20% signals that charging networks must scale rapidly to match fleet growth, particularly for the dominant Tesla Model Y requiring reliable public and destination charging.
