Rivian CEO warns carmakers risk falling behind on EV technology by 2030

RJ Scaringe, chief executive of Amazon-backed Rivian, said traditional carmakers focused on petrol and hybrid vehicles face being woefully behind on technology by the end of the decade. He told an interview in London that the industry has reached a fork in the road between short-term profits and the heavy software investments needed to survive. Ford, General Motors, Honda, Stellantis and Volkswagen have collectively written off more than 70 billion US dollars from previous EV investments, according to Reuters, as the Trump administration has removed EV incentives.
Why it matters: The warning highlights a widening technology gap between legacy manufacturers and EV-focused firms, which may reshape the competitive landscape for charging infrastructure partnerships. Procurement teams should monitor which OEMs maintain long-term EV commitments, as their vehicle roadmaps will drive charging demand and interoperability standards through 2030.
