Guatemala targets 300 electric buses from 2027 with state guarantee fund backing €500 million investment

By Eve

Guatemala plans to procure around 300 electric buses from 2027 to serve as feeder services within a new integrated public transport system for the Guatemala City metropolitan region. A state backed guarantee fund is intended to support fleet financing and could unlock investments of more than €500 million. No tender has been announced and no manufacturer selected, with the plan remaining a procurement intention under a wider public transport reform programme developed with support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency.

Why it matters: The procurement signals a substantial fleet electrification opportunity in Central America, though the absence of a formal tender or manufacturer selection means the timeline and technical specifications remain uncertain. The state guarantee mechanism could offer a financing model for other emerging markets seeking to de risk electric bus investments.
