MG to unveil new plug-in hybrid or EV technology in India on 16 July

By Eve

MG Motor India will reveal a new energy vehicle technology on 16 July, expected to be a rebadged Wuling Starlight 560 SUV available in both plug-in hybrid and full electric variants. The PHEV version features a 1.5 litre petrol engine paired with a 20.5 kWh battery delivering 125 km electric range and over 1,000 km total range, while the EV variant offers a 69.2 kWh battery with 530 km CLTC range. The announcement follows design filings in March for the model codenamed 520.

Why it matters: The dual powertrain launch signals MG's strategy to address India's nascent charging infrastructure through extended range PHEVs alongside pure EVs, potentially influencing fleet procurement decisions and charging deployment priorities. The 20.5 kWh PHEV battery size suggests demand for workplace and destination charging rather than high power corridor infrastructure.
