Norwegian ferry operator Boreal orders 20 Candela electric hydrofoil vessels for coastal routes
By Eve
Boreal, a Norwegian ferry operator, has ordered 20 P-12 electric hydrofoil vessels from Sweden's Candela Technology, announced 23 April 2026. The P-12 combines a cruising speed of 25 knots with a range of around 40 nautical miles and uses computer-controlled hydrofoils to reduce energy consumption by around 80 percent compared with conventional vessels of similar size. The vessels will serve high-speed passenger routes along Norway's 100,000 kilometres of coastline, where electrifying fast ferries has been challenging due to range and speed limitations of conventional electric ferries.
Why it matters
The order demonstrates a procurement solution for electrifying high-speed maritime transport in rural and coastal areas where conventional electric vessels have struggled to match diesel performance. The hydrofoil technology's 80 percent energy reduction could inform charging infrastructure planning for marine transport electrification projects across similar geographies.
