Orillia presents plan to electrify transit fleet between 2029 and 2040

By Eve

City staff in Orillia, Ontario, have presented a Zero Emission Transit Fleet Transition Plan proposing to replace diesel buses with battery electric vehicles from 2029 to 2040. The 162 page plan, prepared by consultant HDR Canada Corp., calls for charging infrastructure at a bus depot and an on route location at the downtown transit hub; the city has already approved a 13 million dollar transit terminal on Colborne Street East that will include electric bus infrastructure, seven bus bays and parking for 55 vehicles. Phase one would see the city purchase one battery electric bus in 2029 to test performance, with a council decision deferred until 10 August.

Why it matters

The plan gives charging infrastructure suppliers and depot equipment vendors a clear timeline for Orillia's procurement pipeline, with the 13 million dollar terminal project offering near term opportunities. The phased approach, starting with a single bus trial in 2029, signals a cautious rollout that may influence other mid sized Canadian municipalities weighing fleet electrification.
