Electrek Podcast covers Rivian earnings, Waymo and Toyota partnership, and Ford's V2H plan for the Fathom pickup

By Eve

In its weekly Friday show, live at 4 p.m. ET on YouTube, Electrek discusses Rivian's earnings, Waymo partnering with Toyota, and Ford betting on vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology for the Fathom electric pickup truck. The episode is archived on YouTube and podcast apps after the show ends at around 5 p.m. ET. The excerpt gives no figures from the earnings or the partnerships.

Why it matters

Ford positioning V2H as a feature of an electric pickup suggests bidirectional charging is moving into mainstream US vehicle offers, which could shape future demand for compatible home and site hardware. The excerpt gives no detail, so buyers should check the full coverage before acting on it.

Waymo selects Toyota bZ4X as next robotaxi, with a Japan test fleet due in 2027

Toyota will build a custom version of the electric bZ4X SUV at its Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, with the Waymo Driver installed and integrated on the same site rather than retrofitted elsewhere. A test fleet will begin operating in Japan in 2027 to test and validate the vehicles, with the UK and other Waymo markets to follow later and no dates given. It is the first vehicle to emerge from the partnership announced in April 2025, and Waymo did not share sensor specifications, unit volumes or per vehicle costs.

Why it matters

A Japanese built robotaxi with factory integrated autonomy points to a future fleet charging load in Tokyo and later the UK, though without volumes or dates it is too early to size depot demand. CPOs and depot developers should treat it as a signal for fleet focused charging, not yet a firm pipeline.

Rivian begins deliveries of upgraded electric van with 30% more range and all-wheel drive option

Rivian has started delivering its first major hardware upgrade for the electric delivery van since production began in 2021, featuring a 129 kWh LFP battery pack that provides 30% more range and a new dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration. The upgrades, confirmed in the company's Q3 2026 shareholder presentation, are available on the larger EDV 700 model and are designed to expand route coverage into rural networks for Amazon's fleet. EPA certification documents issued on 17 September list the new pack at 129 kWh usable, up from the current 100 kWh pack that delivers up to 160 miles of range.

Why it matters

The range and capability upgrade addresses a key constraint in last-mile electrification, enabling fleet operators to deploy electric vans on longer and more challenging routes that were previously out of reach. For charging infrastructure planners, the larger battery and rural deployment focus signal growing demand for depot charging capacity and potential need for en-route charging in less urbanised delivery networks.

Toyota EV sales surge 127% to 309,766 units through September, but China slump drags overall volumes down

Toyota and Lexus sold 309,766 battery electric vehicles globally in the first nine months of 2026, up 127.4% year on year, driven by updated models including the bZ4X and new launches such as the C-HR+ and Urban Cruiser. Despite the EV growth, Toyota's total global sales fell for the third consecutive month in September, down 2.2% to 860,107 units, as demand for petrol and hybrid vehicles weakened in China. The Toyota bZ4X ranked as the 20th best selling EV worldwide through August with nearly 100,000 units sold.

Why it matters

The sharp EV sales increase signals Toyota's belated but accelerating electrification push, potentially expanding the addressable market for charging infrastructure as its dealer and fleet networks transition. However, the China sales decline underscores regional divergence in EV adoption rates, a key consideration for CPOs planning network rollouts and OEM partnerships in different markets.
