Rivian begins deliveries of upgraded electric van with 30% more range and all-wheel drive option

By Eve

Rivian has started delivering its first major hardware upgrade for the electric delivery van since production began in 2021, featuring a 129 kWh LFP battery pack that provides 30% more range and a new dual-motor all-wheel drive configuration. The upgrades, confirmed in the company's Q3 2026 shareholder presentation, are available on the larger EDV 700 model and are designed to expand route coverage into rural networks for Amazon's fleet. EPA certification documents issued on 17 September list the new pack at 129 kWh usable, up from the current 100 kWh pack that delivers up to 160 miles of range.

Why it matters

The range and capability upgrade addresses a key constraint in last-mile electrification, enabling fleet operators to deploy electric vans on longer and more challenging routes that were previously out of reach. For charging infrastructure planners, the larger battery and rural deployment focus signal growing demand for depot charging capacity and potential need for en-route charging in less urbanised delivery networks.

Electrek Podcast covers Rivian earnings, Waymo and Toyota partnership, and Ford's V2H plan for the Fathom pickup

In its weekly Friday show, live at 4 p.m. ET on YouTube, Electrek discusses Rivian's earnings, Waymo partnering with Toyota, and Ford betting on vehicle-to-home (V2H) technology for the Fathom electric pickup truck. The episode is archived on YouTube and podcast apps after the show ends at around 5 p.m. ET. The excerpt gives no figures from the earnings or the partnerships.

Why it matters

Ford positioning V2H as a feature of an electric pickup suggests bidirectional charging is moving into mainstream US vehicle offers, which could shape future demand for compatible home and site hardware. The excerpt gives no detail, so buyers should check the full coverage before acting on it.

Rivian reports 38% revenue rise to $2.155 billion in Q3 2026 as R2 becomes best seller

Rivian posted Q3 2026 revenue of $2.155 billion, up 38% year on year, beating Wall Street expectations of $2.02 billion. The company delivered 19,248 vehicles in the quarter, up 46% annually, with the R2 model now its best seller in its first full quarter of deliveries. Rivian added a second R2 production shift at its Normal, Illinois plant and recorded over 103,000 demo drives in Q3, up from 57,000 in Q2, though the automotive segment posted a $80 million gross loss, a negative 5% margin, partly due to $120 million in R2 ramp costs.

Why it matters

Rivian's rapid R2 uptake and expanded production signal growing demand for mid market electric vehicles, potentially driving infrastructure investment at fleet depots and public charging networks. The company's volume growth, despite margin pressures, suggests sustained need for charging capacity as deliveries scale.

Rivian electric van spotted in Walmart+ livery, hinting at a fleet deal

A Rivian electric delivery van wrapped in Walmart+ branding was photographed on a car hauler in northwest Indiana, marking the first public sign that Walmart could become Rivian's next major van customer after Amazon. Neither company has announced a deal. A second photo showed a similarly liveried van parked at a Walmart Supercenter in Hammond, Indiana, about 30 miles away. Rivian stock rose more than 3% following the sighting, two days before the company reports Q3 2026 results on 29 October.

Why it matters

Walmart has been seeking to electrify last mile delivery for years, and its previous electric van suppliers are no longer in business, creating a potential procurement opportunity. Rivian is one of the few companies still building a purpose built electric delivery van in the US, positioning it as a likely supplier if Walmart moves forward with a fleet order.
