South Africa logged under 17,000 new energy vehicle sales in 2025, reaching 4% market share

South Africa recorded approximately 16,700 new energy vehicle sales in 2025, representing 4% of the 422,103 new passenger vehicles sold, according to the TransUnion South Africa Q4 2025 Mobility Insights Report. The figure marks a rise from 0.3% in 2021, with hybrid vehicles driving most of the growth rather than fully electric models. NAAMSA data showed hybrid and electric passenger vehicle sales increased 8.1% year on year in the first 10 months of 2025, reaching 13,358 units, following a 105% surge in 2024.
Why it matters: The slow but steady uptake, constrained by high prices and limited charging infrastructure, signals that South Africa's charging network will need to expand pragmatically to support hybrid adoption before a larger shift to fully electric fleets. For CPOs and infrastructure planners, the hybrid led transition suggests near term demand will favour flexible charging solutions that accommodate both plug in hybrids and battery electric vehicles.
