IEA projects global EV sales to reach 30% of new vehicles in 2025 as Canada sees 75% March surge
By Eve
The International Energy Agency forecasts global electric vehicle sales will approach 30% of all new vehicles in 2025, following record sales in nearly 100 countries and a 20% increase in 2024 that delivered more than 20 million battery electric and hybrid cars. Canada recorded a 75% year on year rise in EV sales in March 2025. Chinese manufacturers supplied about 60% of the global fleet, with European and North American makers each providing around 15%, and EVs now account for at least 10% of new car sales in approximately 40 countries.
Why it matters
The IEA's projection of a six fold expansion of the global EV fleet from 80 million to 510 million vehicles by 2035 signals sustained demand for charging infrastructure across multiple markets. Procurement teams and charge point operators must prepare for accelerating rollout requirements, particularly in the 40 countries where EVs already represent double digit market share.
