Australia's public EV charging network reaches 1,316 sites but lacks central coordination

As of early July, Australia has 1,316 operational public charging sites with more than 4,000 ports, of which 54% are DC fast chargers rated at 50kW or more. Battery EVs now account for 23% of new car sales in the country. Professor Hussein Dia of Swinburne University of Technology notes that no single authority oversees the rollout, which has been driven largely by private investment, resulting in a network with strengths but also clear gaps in coverage and reliability.

Why it matters: The absence of a coordinating body means procurement teams and charge point operators must navigate a fragmented market with inconsistent standards and coverage. Understanding the scale and composition of the existing network helps CPOs identify underserved corridors and plan deployments that complement rather than duplicate private investment.
