NRMA report on government funded EV charging rollout remains redacted despite Senate order

A 21 page NRMA report detailing problems with a $78 million government funded plan to install 117 EV charging stations across Australia has been published fully redacted, revealing only an average installation cost of $350,000. Around 62 stations have been completed so far. Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson moved last month for climate and energy minister Chris Bowen to table the report by 21 September, but the Senate confirmed last Friday it has not been complied with, with redactions justified as commercially sensitive under Freedom of Information Act provisions.

Why it matters

The withheld report and slow rollout (62 of 117 sites delivered) signal potential procurement or delivery barriers that could affect future public charging tenders in Australia. The disclosed $350,000 per site cost provides a rare benchmark for CPOs and funders evaluating similar projects.
