Waymo to end Uber partnership in Austin and Atlanta from January 2028 and serve riders through its own app

Waymo Co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana told Bloomberg that the company will exit its exclusive Uber partnership in Austin and Atlanta from January 2028, after which riders will use Waymo's own app. She said the Uber app does not guarantee a driverless ride, because riders are matched with human drivers when no Waymo is nearby. Uber says it offered a dedicated robotaxi ride option, which Waymo reportedly declined.

Why it matters

Robotaxi fleet operators are moving to own the customer relationship, which may shape who contracts for depot and fast charging capacity in these cities. CPOs and bidders should expect demand to come from fleet operators directly rather than through ride-hailing platforms.

Uber plans $10 billion for 2,000 robotaxis by 2027 while Waymo already runs about 4,000

Uber said alongside its third quarter earnings that it wants to spend $10 billion to put 2,000 robotaxis into its global fleet by the end of 2027, with around half for the United States and the rest split across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The fleet would span 20 cities and include partners such as May Mobility, Momenta, Zoox and Motional, with 700 robotaxis planned on the platform by the end of this year. The excerpt notes Waymo already has around 4,000 cars in 15 US cities and, per Semafor, aims for 8,000 by the end of the year and 20,000 by the close of 2027.

Why it matters

Large robotaxi fleets concentrated in a limited number of cities point to growing demand for depot and high utilisation charging, with about 1,000 Uber vehicles targeted in the US by 2027. Waymo's far larger planned fleet suggests the main near term opportunity sits with the operators already scaling fastest.
