Scania to start electric truck production in China as market share heads for 50% by early 2027
Swedish truck maker Scania is preparing to manufacture battery-powered trucks at its new Rugao plant in China, awaiting final licensing, as CEO Christian Levin expects electric trucks to reach half of China's market by early 2027. Chinese electric semi truck sales surged almost 80% in the first half of 2026 compared to 2025, on track to exceed 30% of all heavy trucks sold this year. The wholly owned Traton Group facility, built last year, will produce both diesel and electric trucks on shared assembly lines for China and wider Asian markets.
Why it matters
The rapid expansion of charging infrastructure and grid capacity in China, which Levin identifies as the biggest challenge in many countries, offers a blueprint for CPOs and fleet operators planning heavy duty charging rollouts. Scania's accelerated timeline underscores the urgency for depot and corridor charging procurement to keep pace with electric truck adoption rates that are doubling year on year in the world's largest freight market.
