Moray Council approves pavement cable grooves for home EV charging

Moray Council in Scotland has adopted a policy allowing residents to cut regulated grooves in pavements for EV charging cables, addressing trip hazards for the 30 per cent of local households without off road parking. Councillor Draeyk van der Horn, who proposed the motion in 2024, said the move prevents residents being left behind in the EV transition. Homeowners or service providers will fund installation and maintenance, though the Scottish Government's Energy Savings Trust offers a cross pavement charging grant.
Why it matters: The policy removes a planning barrier to residential charging infrastructure in areas with limited driveways, potentially expanding the addressable market for home charge point operators. It also sets a regulatory precedent that other UK councils may follow as on street charging demand grows.
