NEVI EV charger rollout accelerates in 2025 but federal roadblocks persist

Electric vehicle charger installations funded by the US National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) programme accelerated in 2025, though federal roadblocks continued to slow deployment, according to a new report. NEVI, part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, allocated 5 billion dollars to state EV charging buildouts, with an additional 2.5 billion dollars from the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure programme. The programme drove adoption of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) by requiring federal funds to support networks charging multiple vehicle types.
Why it matters: The 7.5 billion dollar federal funding pool remains the largest single procurement opportunity for charging infrastructure in the US, but persistent bureaucratic delays affect project timelines and vendor cashflow. Understanding NEVI's evolving requirements and state implementation speeds is critical for CPOs and suppliers bidding on federally backed tenders.
