Iberdrola and BYD sign agreement to offer free home chargers and bonus electricity to BYD plug-in buyers in Spain
Iberdrola and BYD have announced a strategic agreement to launch the 'Plan Recarga Inteligente' (Smart Recharge Plan) in Spain, covering both home charging and medium and long-distance travel. Buyers of a new BYD plug-in model, including 100% electric cars and DM-i plug-in hybrids, receive the home charging equipment at no extra cost if they contract the installation with Iberdrola at a reduced price. The programme also includes a bonus of 10,000 km of electricity for subscribers to the plan and exclusive advantages on the public charging network, as reported in the announcement excerpt.
Why it matters
Bundling free hardware with an energy utility installation shows automakers and utilities locking up the home charging channel at the point of vehicle sale, which narrows the opening for independent installers and charge point operators. Operators should watch how the public network perks steer BYD drivers towards Iberdrola's charging infrastructure.
